What a wonderful programme Sounds of The Sixties is.
And this morning’s edition was particularly enjoyable.
I could wax lyrical as to why it’s so wonderful (and so educational and intelligent) but I won’t.
However some people don’t think the BBC should do programmes like Sounds of the Sixties, because they’re not “Reithian” enough.
The BBC has always had a mandate to “entertain”. Even in its early days it featured popular entertainment and music. Brian Matthew himself worked for the BBC Light Programme (which started up in 1945). Sounds of the Sixties is a direct continuation of that tradition of entertainment.
And it seems pretty Reithian to me.
(Incidentally, who did put the Ram in the Ramalamadingdong?)
